2024

  • Mia Bowersox received a summer research award through the School of Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering at the College of Charleston. Mia will receive a $5,000 stipend and $1,000 for research expenditures.
  • Kami Beats received a Minorities in STEM Research Award through NASA’s South Carolina Space Grant Consortium. She will receive a $7,500
    stipend and will work on her project during the 2024-2025 academic year.
  • Rebecca Wood has received an Undergraduate Research Award through NASA’s South Carolina Space Grant Consortium. She will receive a $7,500 stipend and will work on her project during the 2024-2025 academic year.
  • Dr. Them was selected to receive a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award. He and his family will travel to Durham University in the United Kingdom in 2025 to live for seven months. Dr. Them will conduct a research project on polluted/contaminated ports along the Yorkshire Coast and Charleston region using traditional and novel stable isotope geochemistry.

2023

  • Rachel Webster presented her research at the annual GSA meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She received a travel award from the College of Charleston for the meeting.
  • Kami Beats and Rachel Webster were selected to meet Vice President Kamala Harris during her trip to the College of Charleston. Congratulations!
  • Dr. Them and his colleagues from across the US have been awarded a research grant through the National Science Foundation’s Frontier Research in Earth Sciences program. Project duration is September 2023 – August 2028. See press releases by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the College of Charleston.
  • Rachel Webster has received an Undergraduate Research Award through NASA’s South Carolina Space Grant Consortium. She will receive a $7,500 stipend and will work on her project during the 2023-2024 academic year. On top of this, Rachel also received an Undergraduate Student Section Research Grant for $1,500 from the Southeastern Section of the Geological Society of America for one of her summer research projects.
  • Emily McKenzie has been chosen as one of two recipients of the Merit Research Assistantship at the College of Charleston. This award includes $13,200 stipend/research support. Emily is also recipient of a 2023 Geological Society of America Graduate Student Research Grant, which includes $2,200 for research expenditures, as well as a 2023 Paleontological Society Award, which includes $1,200 for research expenditures.
  • Rachel Webster has received a SURF grant, which includes a $4,000 stipend and $3,000 for research expenditures over the summer.
  • Skylar Pope has been selected for the 2023 Geology Alumni Endowed Award for summer research, which includes a $5,000 stipend and $1,000 for research expenditures.

2022

  • Skylar Pope has received a Major Academic Year Support (MAYS) grant through the College of Charleston. This award includes $1,291 for research expenditures.
  • Dr. Them accepted an invitation to serve as a Review Editor for Frontiers in Earth Science and Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution.
  • Roxy Buck, Emily Lowe, Corinne Luksch, and Natalie Sorrem have all graduated. Their research projects will culminate in many publications in the coming years.
  • Dr. Them accepted an invitation to serve on the Editorial Board for Geology. His three-year term will be from 2022 – 2024.

2021

  • Emily Lowe has received a Major Academic Year Support (MAYS) grant through the College of Charleston. This award includes $1,500 for research expenditures during the spring 2022 semester.
  • Roxy Buck and Corinne Luksch presented their research at the annual GSA meeting in Portland, Oregon. They each received travel awards from the College of Charleston for the meeting in Portland.
  • Congratulations to Lucy McCann for successfully defending her thesis, “Assessing Heavy Metal Concentrations Surrounding Charleston Marinas and Boatyards” on July 16!
  • Corinne Luksch and Natalie Sorrem received awards through NASA’s South Carolina Space Grant Consortium. Corinne received the Undergraduate Research Award and Natalie received the Minorities in STEM Research Award. Each awardee received a $7,500 stipend and will work on their projects during the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Corinne Luksch has received a $500 scholarship from the Alaska Geological Society for her future research.

  • Natalie Sorrem receives a NASA South Carolina Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate Research Award. This award includes a $7,500 stipend to work on her project during the 2020-2021 academic year.
  • Marisa Knight and Corinne Luksch have been selected as Palmetto Academy Scholars, and they will each be receiving a $7,500 stipend during their summer research over the summer.
  • Parker Sherwood and Natalie Sorrem have received summer research awards through the College of Charleston. Parker received an SSM grant, which includes a $4,000 stipend and $1,000 for research expenditures. Natalie received SURF grant, which includes a $4,000 stipend and $3,000 for research expenditures.
